Crescent Heights Day 5

I confirmed with the front desk that I will extend my time to next week. My hiring will be on a week to week basis, while they figure out what's happening with the person I'm covering for.

Miss Lopez took the reins today. It felt great, she'd tell me when we were going outside or inside. She told me not to be afraid to raise my voice, that we have to have a united front with discipline, or the kids will walk all over us for the rest of the weeks we're subbing. She said we have to work as a team, not like Mr. Wayne, who just leaves us when it hits 4:30. Miss Lopez seemed bothered by Mr. Wayne and his lax ways. I kind of like that she expects more, and that she tells me that.

Miss Leslie realized she forgot to tell me and Miss Lopez an important detail about the playground... there's a door that opens to the front of the school, into a little enclosure between the school and the front gate. That playground door is always open for emergencies, and the kids know they can open it. There needs to be an adult watching that area, because the kids have opened it and know it's not locked. This is now my focus when I'm outside, making sure nobody escapes.

At one point when playing outside and waiting for a bike, Tiana, Emma and I played with little rocks they found around the yard. Tiana liked organizing them by color, and Emma searched for rocks and brought them back to us. I taught them to trade, instead of grab from each other.

Lily's Asian mom came to pick her up. Latina Samantha yelled, "hey it's you!" These kids need more Asians around.

One of the tiniest girls, Ellie (not Elena or Eliana) recognizes everyone's parents when they come to pick up. She will be the first to see them through the door and announce whose mom or dad is here. She looks like a baby but her brain is cranking.

At the end of the day, Miss Nadia told me that I need to move my car out of the parking lot at 4:30, so Mr. Wayne can close the gate after he leaves. I never knew who closed the gate, Miss Nadia said the past few days, she has to close the gate after the kids leave and it takes 10 minutes, and 5:30 turns into 5:40. I felt bad I was creating work for someone. As I left, I asked Miss Tamika who was at the front desk if I should close the gate behind me today. She asked if I knew how to lock it, I said I didn't but I could learn. Miss Tamika asked who told about the gate, almost with an eye roll. I said Miss Nadia, who was right down the hall, so Miss Tamika called her over. Miss Nadia explained how I can move my car at 4:30 like she does, so that gate gets locked. Miss Tamika told her that I can't leave at 4:30 because it's just me and the teacher. Miss Nadia said how she has to stay later to close the gate, Miss Tamika said that I'm a guest and that Mr. Anthony will take care of closing the gate. Miss Tamika validated my feelings of this strange interaction about the parking lot gate. I will only park on the street now.
