Crescent Heights Day 54

There's a weird tension in the classroom with Ms. Sosie, Ms. Jodhi and Ms. Flores. Ms. Sosie left her laptop open on the children's table when we started changing diapers, while the staff meeting was still going. Ms. Flores moved it to Ms. Jodhi's desk, then Ms. Jodhi asked who it belongs to because she was sanitizing surfaces. Sometimes Ms. Jodhi uses her loud voice through her mask, which sounds like shouting but I know it's trying to cut over the noise of the room. Ms. Sosie and Ms. Flores seemed offended by her. It was confusing and could've been avoided if someone asked Ms. Sosie to put away the laptop, or if she just did it herself. I could feel the tension coming from Ms. Sosie, who always thinks she's in trouble, and is also quick to escalate things. Ms. Sosie and Ms. Flores were both unpleased with Ms. Jodhi taking the kids out before we’re done changing them. They exchanged judgments about when to take the kids outside and how to check in before doing so.

Mr. Wayne said that Room 2 yells and name calls. I think Room 1 is reactive and passive aggressive. Which is just as bad and exhausting.

It was hot outside, but I feel less pressure to chase the kids now that Ms. Champ said all the teachers need to help on the playground so we can keep it an open space. Lily grabbed Anthony by his shirt today, that was surprisingly hostile and violent. I told her dad when he picked her up, after he told me that she refused to do anything the doctor asked her at a recent appointment. The doctor said she's a teenager, they've already lost control of her. That comment seems really brutal to tell a parent of a two year old.

Charles was pulling out toys and leaving messes around the classroom when we came inside. He was pulling students' artwork off the walls and tearing it to pieces. Mr. Wayne said he'd get him to clean up, Mr. Wayne does not clean up after the kids. Charles cried and tried to get away when his mom arrived to pick him up. Mr. Wayne picked him up and turned him back around to the blocks. His mom said that he needs to help clean up, and went over to take over from Mr. Wayne. She gave him a hug and while hugging him, I saw she cleaned up for him.

Charles' mom then came over to me and offered me a gift made by her and her daughter. It was a decorated pen, with a fuzzy hard CareBear on the top and sparkly beads below. She said it was a thank you for helping with Charles. I told Ms. Jodhi and she said that she gave them to her and Ms. Nadia yesterday. I felt like it's the mom's acknowledgment that Charles is a lot, almost like a peace offering after the toilet incident.

Ms. Jodhi told me that she and Ms. Nadia stayed until 6:30 last night because Eliana hadn't been picked up. Apparently her mom was supposed to pick her up and never came, so her dad rushed to get her, full of apologies. Ms. Jodhi thinks that Eliana's mom punishes her dad by hurting Eliana, his favorite daughter. I wondered why Eliana was finding me for hugs this week, she must need extra affection right now. And Ms. Champ screamed and yelled and Ms. Nadia questioning why the parents weren’t called earlier, and made Ms. Nadia cry.

Zarah has been my little sticker hungry shadow this week. As I went to get a sticker for her sister, Iris, I heard Zarah say to me “you’re a brat.” I was walking towards the door and doubled back to confirm what I heard. Iris and Nathan heard brat too. I left to get stickers and put them on their t-shirts, except Zarah. I told Zarah she can’t call me names and she needs to apologize. She said sorry and her eyes looked watery, like she felt bad. She talks faster than she can think, just like she tries to walk faster than her feet can take her and she trips over her big shoes.
