Crescent Heights Day 55

Today was the easiest day since we started the new class. 14 kids, Maximus stayed home, Charles was picked up before we went outside, and it was only 80º.

Charles was running around while the kids slept. I chased him around and cornered him back at his cot. I asked if we could change him early, it was 2pm, because I could smell poop in his diaper and that could be why he wouldn't lay down. Ms. Leslie just brought Tilly, Mila and Zarah back from the toilets, but Ms. Jodhi told me to wait until at least 2:15 to start changing like Mr. Wayne wanted. Ms. Sosie and I waited, there was crying from the kids, but once it hit 2:15, we started changing.

Charles was upset he had to sit at the table after his poopy diaper was changed and he ate his snack, and I sat him in front of me, like what Ms. Flores does with Maximus. Ms. Leslie brought over dinosaurs for him to play with and he threw them across the table. When his dad came to pick him up, I said to Charles, and we're going to work on not throwing our toys, in a sing song voice. His dad asked, did he throw toys here? And I answered, yes he just did before you arrived. I love that I can tell the parents what their kids do without talking to the parents.

Ms. Jodhi pointed to a sign on the wall that said no computer time if there are children awake in the classroom. Another passive aggressive note from Ms. Champ, who commented on Ms. Jodhi being on the computer yesterday. I think she wanted it to stay nap time as a response to the note, so she won't be in trouble for being on the computer with kids who are up before nap time is over.

When we went outside, it felt more manageable because by then we only had Ava and maybe 9 other kids. Ava went far away to the tricycle side of the older kid area, completely out of sight from our area. I followed her there, she screamed when her wheels got caught in the dips of garden on the side of the cement path. Her mom arrived as she screamed and I tried to get her to come back to the other side of the yard.

Ms. Jodhi was also upset with Ava's mother, who complained to Ms. Flores again about Ava having a full diaper after the car ride home. Ms. Sosie said that it's common for kids to poop once they get in the car after holding it all day, especially kids like Ava with special emotional needs. Ms. Flores told me and Ms. Sosie to make sure we remember to log all of the diaper changing, because Ms. Jodhi didn't document her changes, they couldn't reference it when Ava's mom complained. I made sure to write down the kids Ms. Jodhi changed after we came inside.

We only had 3 kids left by 4pm. Zarah, Abigail and the TV entranced Lily. Ellie came back to our room again, she said she wants to be back in our room. Zarah demanded markers for coloring, then sand, and when she wouldn't clean up, Ms. Roberts said she needs boundaries, she needs to clean up. I love the older aides who want to teach the kids to be respectful.

I think Ms. Jodhi reminds me of Auntie Diane. She scares and intimidates people who don't know her well because she's strong and she doesn't take bullshit. She is frank and honest and consistent. But I'm not afraid of her because I get to see the soft side too. And I get to know why she's angry or annoyed and coming off harsh.
