Miss Leslie had the same conversation with Emma and Abigail's mom about potty training. She said that the school is already letting Abigail start a month early, the rest of the students start in August, and now she's asking everyone about potty training?! Miss Leslie will check with her union if aides are responsible for potty training or just changing diapers. She said Crescent Heights was one of the last schools to allow diapered kids, most schools started last summer.
For the second day, Ms. V had the kids watch a number counting video that they jump to. It gets the kids so excited and jumpy and antsy. Then she wants them all to listen to her before we go outside, and she will call on who can line up to go outside. The majority of the kids were outside and I went to the far corner to watch the front gate.
I hear Ms. Flowers and Mr. Wayne yell my name, saying that Ms. V needs me inside. I come inside and Eliana is rolled into a ball on the rug, sobbing, completely red in the face. Ms. V asked me to help get her up and sit her outside for a timeout. I was called as reinforcements to soothe Eliana, not the two permanent aides, but me the substitute. I rubbed her back and had her take deep breaths to stop crying. She slowly got up, still unable to talk. I dried her face and we went outside and sat down. Ms. Flores was sitting with Emma, Abigail, Sophie and Penny, who were all in a timeout. Eventually, after they patiently sat with us, we let them play.
Penny did not want to play with Sophie, so Sophie was wailing as she followed Penny around the yard. Sophie was crying like Penny cried the other day. It was Penny's last day. When her mom picked her up, she asked to take a photo but Penny was too shy to pose with me. Her mom told me that Penny talks about me at home and how I have the most beautiful hair.
Samantha and Tiana were picking flowers when we lined up to go inside. I told them to stop picking flowers so they don't die. The other kids started going in the classroom and as I directed them to the bathroom, Samantha and Tiana continued picking flowers. I put my head by the door and shouted, "Samantha and Tiana, stop picking flowers and get inside." My tone and volume felt like it silenced the playground and everyone, teachers included, looked at Samantha and Tiana. They ran in embarrassed. My teacher voice comes whenever she is needed.
It's nice to feel like a team with Ms. V. She can call me to help her and vice versa.
Ms. Alex asked if I could continue subbing until September, when Miss Kelly will be back. I told her I can and I'm also applying to other jobs, but I'll let her know how my schedule changes. And she said that she can move my hours if needed too. So I know what I'm doing for the summer!
