18 kids. 95º outside.
Ms. Champ came into the classroom while the kids were still sleeping and gathered the staff together for an announcement. She told us that teachers are not allowed in the bathroom, only aides. The teachers need to stay in the classroom because they can be alone with more kids than aides. Only aides should be taking kids to the restroom.
I joked with Ms. Jodhi after that I'm surprised she told us in person and it wasn't a posted sign on the wall. Ms. Jodhi smiled and said, "did you notice how I didn't say a word? I never heard of being penalized for changing a dirty diaper, definitely if you're not changing the diapers, but penalized for helping?"
Ms. Leslie already took the potty trained girls to the restroom, and left to get the snacks. Ms. Jodhi asked why there are kids getting up, Ms. Sosie and I shrugged. I told Ms. Sosie we should wait until 2:15, like Ms. Jodhi says, even if Ms. Leslie wants to start earlier. We're both confused by the constantly changing and conflicting information, but I'd rather do what Ms. Jodhi says than Ms. Leslie.
It was really hot outside. I was watching the gate to make sure Ava and Max didn't try to open it. Amaya kept looking through the fence to see if her mom was coming, other kids joined her. I joked that they're little puppies in the window, waiting to be adopted. Ms. Leslie came to find me, she said the front office called me in. I dropped my head and said, what did I do now? Ms. Flores and Ms. Leslie asked why I would think I'm in trouble, I told them about the last time I was called in for raising my voice. Ms. Leslie thought it would be about extending my time.
I went to the front desk, Ms. Alex looked confused why I was there, like I came to ask a question. She remembered and asked me if I can continue. I told her I cannot on Friday, I already made plans, but possibly next week, I'm waiting to hear about a job. Ms. Champ chimed in from her office that I have been here everyday, I need a break or at least Friday off. Ms. Alex said she'll get a sub for Friday, Ms. Champ agreed that Classroom 1 needs every person they can get. Ms. Alex would be gone tomorrow and Friday, so I'd have to coordinate with Ms. Champ if I can't come in next week. Ms. Flores is so excited for me to stay, she says how the kids already know me and I'm so great with them. Ms. Jodhi says that I'm going to get the Parks job, it's good that it's taking long to hear back, she believes the job will manifest.
After we came inside around 3:30, Ms. Jodhi and I changed diapers in the classroom while Mr. Wayne cleaned up outside. I started drawing with Zarah, Ms. Jodhi told me that Zarah's father complained to her about his family the last time he picked up Zarah and Iris. He told her he doesn't get along with his mother-in-law so she won't be picking up the girls and that he wants to leave his pregnant wife, newborn and two daughters. Ms. Jodhi told him that he is building bad karma if he does that, he needs to apologize to his wife and mother in law. The next day, grandma picked up the girls, and in her limited English asked if she spoke to her son-in-law, and then put her hands together and bowed her head, like a thank you prayer. The father hasn't picked them up since. I can't believe a parent would confess that to the child's teacher.
