I told Ms. Jodhi that I need to learn how to lift the kids without hurting my back because I woke up so sore today. She said if I'm hurting from lifting the kids, then I shouldn't lift the kids and I'm doing too much. I thanked her, I told her how my mentality has changed to not overdo it and ask for help. Then Maximus woke up and ran to me for a hug. Ms. Sosie and I decided to change the early leavers first, and then whoever is awake, so Maximus was next to change. He was a good sport.
Charles woke up and ran to me for a hug too. I like that the difficult running boys trust me and hug me. I feel like they're not afraid of me, which might mean I lack authority with them, but then they run to me for hugs and I realize I have a different purpose for them. I'm the soft one.
It feels like we got our rhythm outside now. Ms. Leslie, Ms. Sosie and I corral the kids around the apparatus. When Ms. Sosie leaves, we herd them to their area. Ms. Flores said Maximus and Ava know how to open the door that opens to the outside, and tried to escape this morning. Ms. Flores was eager to leave and brought the kids in before Ms. Jodhi was back from break. Mr. Wayne stayed outside to clean up, I told him that he could get the older kids to clean up with him because they made the mess, and I'd stay inside with the kids and Ms. Flores.
I took the potty trained girls to the bathroom as Ms. Flores and Ms. Jodhi changed over. Zarah came to me complaining about Mr. Wayne, who I asked to help her color and make airplanes. I like that Zarah comes to me for comfort, she too is defiant and pushes boundaries, but is a soft little girl who needs a hug and sympathy too.
Kamila cried for her mom all afternoon. If Ms. Jodhi wasn't around, she'd cry for Ms. Jodhi. I asked Mr. Wayne if she cries in the morning, he said she's always crying for nothing and they know she's okay because she'll stop when she finds something she likes to do. It's so grating hearing a child cry nonstop. And nothing can soothe her.
There's a girl named Kalayah (kah-lay-ah), who usually leaves early but came back in the classroom today. Abigail was putting a piece of paper on Kalayah's head, something she's done to play with other girls who start crying because they want her to go away, and Kalayah laughed. They laughed together, Abigail found a friend with the same sense of humor as her! I told Ms. Jodhi and she admired how I see these subtle interactions between the kids.
Ms. Jodhi enjoys and agrees with the terms I use to describe the behavior of the kids. Lily is stealth, how she quietly pushes and quietly stirs others up. Zarah is a candy bully, like when she came up to me yesterday and said "gimme your candy."
Charles' mom brought donuts in the morning for the teacher. I took two and I plan to eat them. Ms. Nadia told me for the second time this week that I looked really sweaty and she worried that I wasn't well. My sweat earns me donuts.
I overheard Ms. Champ is out on vacation. It's the end of the second week of the new year, and she leaves for vacation.
