Jorge, who had been gone for a few weeks, refused to take off his diaper or use the toilet. He laid down on the floor of the bathroom, surrounded by me, Ms. Sosie and Ms. Jodhi. He refused to get up and Ms. Jodhi finally picked him up and brought him back to the classroom, she said we don't have time for 3 teachers to deal with him, she's making the executive decision and not changing him. She told his grandparents that he wasn't changed and explained why when they picked him up, she said with his grandparents we really have to cover ourselves because they will complain to the school.
I'm learning that the teachers, and maybe the permanent aides, are the ones who can raise their voices and apply more pressure to the kids. I don't need to make an effort to make these kids into upstanding citizens, according to Ms. Champ, I'm just here to assist them.
Zarah and her sister, Iris, have been more punchy this week. Ms. Nadia said Iris couldn't color, she needs a timeout because she was pushing kids on the playground. Ezekiel came to me because Zarah hit him in the little covered gazebo, I told Ms. Jodhi who started calling Zarah's name, but she didn't even turn her head to acknowledge her. We think this aggression is coming from the new baby in their house, they probably aren't getting the same attention they're used to.
Emma stayed home again today, Abigail thrived. Apparently, when Emma's mom brought Emma to pickup Abigail yesterday afternoon, Ms. Alex got upset that Emma came back because she was sent home sick. Luca stayed home sick today, after we told his parents he had loose stool. Zarah had a weird, loose stool today and Ms. Jodhi thinks there might be a virus going around. I washed my hands and did not touch my face today. I think I might need to wear a mask.
Ms. Leslie asked what I do with the first part of my day. I told her how this is my only job, I used to work in the film business and I'm trying out new things. She said she started in early ed, then worked at law offices and other places before coming back. She said you'll always run into annoying rules and bureaucracy wherever you go, she ultimately decided to come back to this. While that is true, the stakes are different where you go. I think she's trying to encourage me to stay, just not as pushy as Ms. Nadia.
I almost forgot my biggest accomplishment. I saw a scary black spider inside the trashcan lid when throwing away a milk carton with Eliana. I went to Ms. Leslie to tell her and she said we could kill it with a broom. She calmly lifted the lid but the spider wasn't there, I looked around and found it on the can. I got it on a broom and Ms. Leslie saw it, and said it's a black widow, we have to kill it. I smacked the broom on the ground until the widow was crumpled and dead and then scooped it with the broom into the trash. I told Ms. Leslie that I'm terrified of spiders and that was the bravest I've ever been. She said she's scared of them too and was trying to keep her cool!
